Overview
The 2019 Porsche 911 GT2 RS currently sits atop the performance hierarchy of the storied 911 nameplate. Its heavily vented bodywork and conspicuous rear wing help identify what also happens to be the most powerful production 911 that Porsche has ever built. The GT2 RS has set lap records at tracks such as the Nürburgring Nordschleife and more recently at Road America. During our annual Lightning Lap in 2018, we drove one equipped with the Weissach package that crushed the 755-hp Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 and the sensational McLaren 720S.
Engine, Ride, and Handling
The 911 GT2 RS is what happens when you combine a lightweight sports car with a 3.8-liter flat-six that cranks out 700 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. That monstrous power is sent to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Along with a set of sticky Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, the prodigious powertrain helped the 911 GT2 RS basically teleport from zero to 60 mph in 2.6 seconds and disintegrate a quarter-mile drag strip in 10.3 seconds at 140 mph. Of course, this extraordinary Porsche has moves like Mick Jagger and the mechanical equivalent of telepathy. Its highly adroit chassis helps the GT2 RS stay planted in the corners and yet remain livable on normal roads. However, don't mistake this 911 for a daily driver. The sound of its wailing engine is exhilarating on the track but can be excruciating on long highway trips.
Interior and Technology
While Porsche didn't transform the inside of the GT2 RS into a race-focused environment, its standard fixed-back seats can be uncomfortable when the racetrack turns into city traffic. Thankfully, a set of adjustable seats are available without added cost. The interior design will be familiar among pre-992-generation 911s, with its slanted center console and five-gauge instrument panel. A mix of leather and faux-suede surfaces cover the cabin and lend a surprisingly luxurious appearance. The standard touchscreen infotainment system includes Apple CarPlay capability but not Android Auto. Desirable options include Bose surround sound and a front axle-lift system, which should help prevent scraping its chin spoiler on obstacles
